A Quick History of the
Free City-States of Tres

by Finch
The people of Tres are the descendents of the empires that controlled the north over the centuries in an era long past.  They are believed to be the original human population to have started with the city of Kantrel and the birth of the Greater Tres Empire during the Age of Earth, many of these ancient powers fell due to war or decimated by internal strife.  Cities were built upon the rubble of their past predecessors and the ancient ways were continually destroyed or rewritten by the victors.  What stands today survived through the major devastation from the Shadow Wars and the Ardalian expansion.  The last empire to control the region was the Tressekian Empire, emerging after Ardal withdrew in 3286 (Ardalian calendar).  Only three years after, the empire dissolved into the three city-states of Trevista, Otrista, and Madridier.

These three major cities now stand alone, formed to protect themselves from other local powers and the threat of the Ardalian Empire returning.  The cities have become self-sustaining and have their individual governmental structures to maintain peace and control.  The surrounding communities and large manors also maintain some autonomy from the larger cities.

The city of Trevista has always been the largest city and often the capital to the region.  The people have long held many of the ancient oral traditions and are fierce horse riders.

Otrista has become the only place to establish a religious organization honoring the ancient gods, primarily Mannab.  The government is run by a council of High Priests of Mannab and a majority of the Tressians in the city have become zealots of Mannab.  The city is well-known for its numerous catacombs and chambers hidden below the streets.

Madridier is one of the older cities which formed from some the earlier Madraderian tribes taking a sedentary life.  During many of the city's growing stages, the tent encampments stretched farther than the city itself.  Small walls and wells dug still stand outside the outer most edges of the city and along the main thoroughfares.  Also, many of the people of Rajisham who fled during its demise found refuge here.
