'First Wave'
The Age of Empires is coming to an end as the shadows grow long.
Did you know?
Elves tend to be taller but have slimmer frames than humans.  The life expectancy of the northern elves is around 100 years while the southern elves is about 60 years, due to the higher exposer to disease.

When you think you have seen it all, the world will make you scratch your head in wonder.  In the northern counties of the Ardalian Empire there is an unusual, symbiotic relationship between a potato-like plant and a beetle.  The poggin, also commonly called a pog, is a staple starch in the Ardalian Empire and other surrounding lands.

The poggin is a tuberous
plant with a broad-leafed
flower above the surface.
The tuber can grow to
the size of a large fist
and has eyes to create
a rooting system.  The
flower ranges in color
from a white to a light
pink to a violet.  The
tubers and leaves are
the edible parts while the
flower and stems can cause mild gastral discomfort.
Poggin
An interesting fact is that some Ardalian nobles have a traditional delicacy; a stark beetle cooked in a poggin.  Poggin fields are typically harvested before the rainy season begins. But some farmers leave sections of their fields to be flooded.  Within a week, stark beetles will burrow into the tubers for a food source as the plant begins to rot.  These pogs are collected and wrapped in leaves then placed on the coals of a fire and roasted.

Another use of the tuber is to ferment young specimens and produce a pog liqueur.  This process is a tightly held secret in the Byrne Merchant House of Ardal.
One of the unique features of the plant is the symbiotic relationship with the stark beetle.  The crop fields are crisscrossed with their borrowed homes.  These beetles play a major part in a crop's yield by aiding in the pollination process and keeping harmful insects from destroying the crop.
