The stark beetle (Thyshen, stark), a ground beetle, is found in the northern parts of the Ardalian Empire.  They have a distinctive orange exoskeleton with yellow highlights.  The beetle's major food sources are rotting vegetation and other insects.  They make their homes in the ground by burrowing small networks of tunnels.

Stark beetles have a major role in a farmer's poggin crop output.  The beetles facilitate the pollination process and eat insects harmful to the plant.  The local farmers will often collect and exchange or sell beetles at the local markets.  Farmers with high yields will sell some of their beetles believing that they provide a source of good luck or believe they have the god's favor.

Elves tend to be taller but have slimmer frames than humans.  The life expectancy of the northern elves is around 100 years while the southern elves is about 60 years, due to the higher exposer to disease.

One interesting fact
is that some Ardalian
nobles have a
traditional delicacy; a
stark beetle cooked
in a poggin.  Poggin
fields are typically
harvested before the
rainy season begins
but some farmers
leave sections of
their fields to be
flooded.  Within a
week, stark beetles
will burrow into the tubers for a food source as the plant begins to rot.  These pogs are collected and wrapped in leaves then placed on the coals of a fire and roasted.
